The marriage of Christopher Keating and Caroline Connaughton has made history not only for them and their 20 guests, but also the wedding venue .

They were the first couple to tie the knot in the newly-opened register office at Bedford’s Old Town Hall, in a ceremony conducted by Superintendent Registrar Miriam Burgess, on Friday (July 1),

The office shows off the Victorian splendour of the Old Council Chamber and Mayor’s Parlour, and adjoins the new public square with its riverside views and bridge to St Mary’s Gardens which form part of the new Riverside Development.

Deputy Mayor Charles Royden said: “The new register office is a stunning, historic setting for weddings and civil partnerships in an attractively refurbished location.”

“I am so glad I was able to stop by on Friday to congratulate Chris and Caroline and present them with flowers on behalf of Bedford Borough Council. They are the first of many couples who will celebrate their special day here in Bedford’s Register Office and I wish them many happy years together.’
