South Wing maternity services nominated for award

Hospital delivers around 3,200 births a year

A maternity department at Bedford Hospital has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Bedford Hospital NHS Trust has received a nomination for the Nursing Times' awards for the improving maternity services category, and agency nurse Lois Penketh has also been shortlisted for her contribution to nursing.

The improving maternity services award recognises initiatives that have improved the care of women and their babies during pregnancy, labour or the postnatal period.

Clinical midwifery manager Mandy Pachulski said: "We are very excited about being shortlisted for this award.

"The quality of midwifery care has a huge impact on a woman's experience of pregnancy and birth. That is why giving mothers a positive experience and good quality of care is our priority.

"At Bedford Hospital we see around 3,200 births a year and we are rightly proud of the services we deliver."

"We aim to provide one-to-one care for mothers in established labour and seek to give mothers as much choice as possible.

Endoscopy nurse Lois Penketh King has also been shortlisted in the bank/agency nurse category. Bank and agency nurses provide vital support to both NHS and non-NHS organisations.

She said: "I am shocked and greatly honoured to be nominated for this award.

"I love my work and just do my job like any other nurse. I think it's brilliant that bank and agency nurses can be recognised."
