Showcase of talent at festival of music, speech and drama

The Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama got underway at the weekend.

Talented people of all ages are on the stage this week at a number of venues in a bid for a host of shields, cups, medals and other prizes in the festival which runs until Saturday, March 8.

Photographer June Essex has captured a flavour of some of the performances, which end on Saturday afternoon.

Today at the Corn Exchange will be duologues, dramatic solo, harp solo, string duets, bowed instruments, concerto and string recital.

Over in the Harpur Suite will be bowed instruments, while the Howard Room hosts verse speaking solo and duet, prepared reading and Shakespeare solo.

Today (Thursday, March 6) at 10.30am in St Paul’s Church will be a celebration of music form special schools.

On Friday, March 7, more duologues, solo and verse speaking in the Corn Exchange, with musical theatre at 6pm.

The Harpur Suite sees musical theatre and singing, with verse speaking in the Howard Room.

The final day, Saturday, March 8 at the Corn Exchange, sees creative performances and poetry, with singing in the Harpur Suite.

The festival is rounded off on Saturday with a gala concert at 6.30pm with official accompanist Tim Grant-Jones. Visit
