As Bedford’s newest children’s book shop was officially opened, hundreds came to meet ribbon-cutter and Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell.

Rogan’s Books invited the Laureate to host Saturday’s ceremony along with several children’s authors and illustrators.

Chris Riddell said: “Bedford is very lucky to have a new bookshop brimming with beautiful books just waiting to be discovered and I was thrilled to be asked to open it.”

Owner Rachael Rogan said the turnout shows children really love reading. “I am so humbled by how many people came. Now we’re open we’ll give children and parents a chance to enter a world of unknown adventure and wild creativity.”

Bedford’s David Litchfield was on hand to sign his new book, The Bear and The Piano, along with other children’s favourites Steve Cole, Katharine James and Katy Dynes, and Lloyd Lugsden.

Also at the opening was Ian Henderson from Forest School who brought along Indiana the Barn Owl.

Rachael added the shop, in Castle Road, will also host after-school and holiday activities, baby and toddler reading and yoga groups.
