Bedfordshire schoolchildren mark memorial day

Schoolchildren from across Bedfordshire met at Redborne Upper School in Ampthill last week, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Legacy of Hope event on Wednesday, January 27, was organised by the Diocese of St Albans schools team.

Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated in countries across the world.

The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

As well as remembering the Nazi holocaust the day marks holocausts and pogroms which have taken place across the world throughout history.

The Bedfordshire event included drama performances by pupils from Redborne and Goldington Middle School, readings by Samuel Whitbread Community College students, and a speech by the Bishop of Bedford.

Students also listened to musical performances of Schindler's List and the Jewish Supplication for Cello before they lit memorial candles.
