Youngsters from Wootton Lower School marked the start of construction work for a new school building with Mayor of Bedford Borough Dave Hodgson.

Construction work is due to be completed in July 2015 and is being built off Fields Road in the centre of a housing development that is fully populated.

The lower school site will be for pupils from the ages of four to nine.

Those that gathered to see the start of work included teachers, pupils, the chairman of Wootton Parish Council and Ian Woodward from Mi-Space, the contractor delivering the project.

The new school will be run by the current headship at Wootton Lower School in Bedford Road.

Headteacher Chris Tavener said: “A new school in the village has been discussed for over 10 years and through some great work with the parish council, Persimmon Homes, school staff, governors and the local authority we are delighted that the extension to our existing school will be open in September.”
