Pupil with designs on Google's logo

11-year-old from Kempston reaches final of national competition.

An internet competition has made staff and pupils come over all Google-y, at the prospect of having their artwork splashed across the worldwide web.

Sheza Rani, an 11-year-old at Robert Bruce Middle School in Kempston, has reached the national final of a contest to design a new logo for search engine Google.

And if she can beat 47 other regional winners to claim first prize, her design will be used on the Google.co.uk home page for 24 hours, and Sheza and her family will be given a week-long holiday to California where they will meet Google's webmaster Dennis Hwang.

Sheza, who lives in Galloway Close, Kempston, said: "The competition was to show your community, so my design shows all places in Bedford and Kempston.

"So there is grass and hills in the background, there is Kempston town hall, the temple in Queens Park, flats where people live, Addison Howard Park, and the River Great Ouse flowing through.

"I really enjoy art, and painting is my favourite. Normally I sit down and draw what comes into my mind, but this time I had to sit down and think up ideas first, so this was my third attempt at it.

"At first it was quite hard, but after a while all the ideas came to me."

Sheza was one of six pupils at Robert Bruce whose efforts were entered into the competition.

Alison Gaynor, head of art at the school, added: "What is so impressive about Sheza's entry is all the colours, which really make it stand out.

"After she completed it she had friends looking at it over her shoulder, because they were so impressed."

The Doodle for Google competition is decided by internet votes, so Sheza needs Times & Citizen readers to add their support.
