Praise for North Beds innovative businesses reaches national audience
Bedfordshire gets recognition in House of Commons
Farmers in Bedfordshire have received recognition in the House of Commons for their innovation and production.
Speaking in the House of Commons, North East Beds MP Alistair Burt praised the efforts of his constituents.
And he singled out Bedford-based Biogen for their innovative use of waste products to make energy; Sharnbrook based Unilever for its world-class research establishment into safer and better foods and the Garden Friends scheme in Roxton.
Mr Burt told ministers: "My family and I get our vegetables every week in a veg box from Garden Friends.
"There is no unnecessary packing and we get vegetables that are locally produced, where possible, and seasonal.
"I commend Val and Mark for the work they are doing, but they are not the only ones to have pioneered that form of retailing, recognising the changing culture.
He added: "Unilever's main food science research establishment is based at Colworth park.
"It is a remarkable establishment, containing the most northerly tea plantation in the world -Lipton is the brand- and looking after such wonderful things as ice cream and so on."
Speaking to fellow MPs in the House of Commons Mr Burt said: "North East Bedfordshire is a good example of how suppliers, producers and retailers can be innovative in how they respond to the challenges both domestic and overseas, despite Government overregulation which often ties them up in needless red tape and makes their lives more difficult."
