A group of police officers and staff running in memory of murder PC Nicola Hughes are appealing for support as they face the final stretch.

The 26 runners from Bedfordshire Police have signed up to a daily run for 125 days and have been maintaining their challenge since before Christmas.

The “Run to Remember” project aims to raise money for charity in the memory of Manchester police officer Nicola Hughes.

PC Hughes and her colleague PC Fiona Bone were murdered on duty in August 2012 by Dale Cregan, already on the run after being named as wanted for two previous murders.

Each participant has been aiming to complete a run of at least two miles per day since December 1, and has to keep this up for a total of 125 days. The 125-day countdown finishes on the day of the North Pole Marathon in April, where Nicola’s father will compete in this gruelling 26-mile race in the last stage of the “Run to Remember”.

Police staff and officers from forces all round the country have been taking part and proceeds from all the runs will be split between the North West Police Benevolent Fund, Care of Police Survivors and Victim Support.

PC Jenny Bryce, of the Public Protection Unit, said: “We are now halfway through our challenge and have run over 3,250 miles between us - and yes, some of the team did run on Christmas Day!

“It’s hard going in this weather but we really want to reach our fund raising target and so we have organised a raffle and cake sale to help us next month.

“And even though it is hard work, it’s been a great challenge to get out. Some of us have really improved our fitness and it’s been nice to have the benefits of doing it with colleagues, some of whom I’ve not known well before.” Anyone who would like to help Jenny and her colleagues raise money for the three charities can do so by donating on line at www.justgiving.com/bedfordshirepoliceruntoremember

People can also donate via text message if they send BEDS55 followed by the amount they wish to donate to 70070 (e.g. BEDS55 £5).
