Pedal power takes teenager duo from Kenya to Bedford in a day

Fundraiser for orphanage tops expectations

Saddling up for a freewheeling fundraiser, a cycling duo managed to ride from Kenyan soil to Bedford turf in one day this week.

Joe Dorgham, 18, head boy at Bedford School, and Anthony Scott, 18, head of Bedford School's charities committee, jumped on their bikes to ride the 150km from the Kenyan Embassy in London to De Parys Avenue.

In doing so the pair also smashed their charity fundraising target of 1,500, which will be split between the Utange Orphanage in Kenya and Sue Ryder Care, which runs St John's Hospice in Moggerhanger.

The Kenyan children's shelter was founded two years ago by Debbie Scott, Anthony's mother, and already houses 10 Aids orphans.

A spokeswoman for Bedford School said: "We are delighted to announce that Joe Dorgham and Anthony Scott have reached their initial 1,500 fundraising target, which is an incredible achievement.

"Based on the success of the fundraising so far, the boys have chosen to raise the amount and target 2,000."

The cycling pair were also joined by Bedford School headteacher John Moule for the final 45-kilometre leg of the journey.

The Utange Orphanage needs to raise 18,000 each year to maintain the current building and is already planning to build a second shelter to house a further 10 children next year.
