Overnight works costing £4.5 million will create a better, longer lasting road surface on the A421 Bedford southern bypass.
It will take three months to complete and will improve 5.6 miles of the road between the A6 at Elstow and the A4280 at Renhold, which links motorists to the M1.
Highways Agency team leader Aran Nugent said: “Normally for this type of maintenance we would replace patches of the road surface where it is needed. Here though we are taking a different approach that will mean a whole new road surface for drivers - and fewer roadworks in the future.
The works will start next week and will mean that daytime motorists will have to drive at a reduced speed of 40mph. At night one carriageway will be closed at a time.
