New homes for Central Bedfordshire

5,000 new homes to be built

Sites for around 5,000 new homes have been approved by Central Beds bosses.

At a meeting of the council's executive last Tuesday, councillors approved the locations of 54 sites in the north of the authority's area, set for development before 2026.

The list has been whittled down from more than 440 potential sites submitted by developers and put to two rounds of public consultation in the last two years.

Councillor Tom Nicols, portfolio holder for sustainable development, said: "I understand why people object to growth, but we have an obligation to control and direct growth, not leave it to developers and the planning appeal system to select the sites where it takes place without local people having the opportunity to be involved."

Central Beds received nearly 11,000 comments on the proposed sites following 20 exhibitions across the north of the authority's boundary.

Consultation on the suitability of these sites will take place in February/March 2010 after Central Beds Council signs them off in January.

The Secretary of State will hold a public examination of the respon-ses.

Councillor Nicols added: "This has been a long process but we are now nearing the end of it.

"This will enable us to control development in the north of the area by having a full range of options for both homes and employment development across the area."
