A new depot for plant hire company Hewden has been officially opened in Ampthill by Mid Beds MP Nadine Dorries.

The company has invested £2m in the innovative depot at Station Road, close to M1 junction 13, and has doubled the size of the workforce.

The new 3.6acre site offers customers greater product availability as designated machines from the company’s record £61m investment have all been added to the ready line.

The investment includes excavators, tele-handlers, dumpers, access platforms and booms in addition to a new crane fleet ranging from 35-tonne to 125-tonne machines, which will be operated from the site.

The team has doubled in size from that of the original Bedford depot to 37 staff. The experienced depot plant hire team, with a combined service of over 150 years, is now taking care of the new recruits as they learn the ropes.

Hewden also has mechanical plant apprentices joining the team.

Depot manager Karl Varley said: “This flagship depot is a pleasure to manage. The team have the very best working conditions - we have a ready line of the latest equipment and a fleet of new wagons. The team look forward to exceeding our customers’ expectations with even more, on-time deliveries.”

The fleet of ten delivery wagons are now all commissioned and on the road, delivering the Hewden Core Fleet, a guaranteed next day service to customers the length and breadth of the M1 corridor.

Hewden took advantage of the new build opportunity to incorporate the very latest wash bays, drainage and water harvesting. Hewden has considered the impact on the environment and great care was taken to ensure that any potential pollution and spillage was eliminated.

In addition motion sensor and LED lighting has been installed around the site making Hewden Bedford the most economical, ecological and safest site in its depot network.

Commercial director Susan Shardlow, who managed the project from Brownfield site to handover, said: “I am delighted to say that the project was delivered on time and on budget. The built in benefits are all now fully operational, making this depot a true leader in its field, a working model of a vision we have for our future plant hire operations.”
