A mosque has been given the green light to extend despite worries over a lack of car parking provision.
The planning application for the religious building on the corner of Ford End Road and Coventry Road was passed at Bedford Borough Council’s planning committee meeting on Monday.
It gives permission for a two story extension, that will involve the creation of two halls of worship along with a dome on top of the mosque and three minarets. Improvements will also be made to the kitchens and toilets.
The planning committee went against the officer’s recommendation to refuse the application on the grounds of the lack of parking provision. The mosque itself has no on-site parking.
A report presented to councillors said: “The proposal will enable a significant increase in the capacity of the mosque and result in a significant shortfall in car parking provision.
“There is evidence that the existing use is resulting in dangerous parking and causing congestion on surrounding streets and the proposed extension of the mosque will only increase these problems and result in a severe impact on highway safety.”
