Ampthill’s new Mayor has taken up his chain with plans to bring more music to town.

Town councillor Mike Blair was voted in by his council colleagues having served as Deputy Mayor last year.

His many duties as Ampthill’s ‘first citizen’ include raising money for charities, which this year are the East Anglian Air Ambulance, Sight Concern Bedfordshire and funding a new minibus for the Leonard Cheshire Home at Agate House, in Ampthill.

The Mayor said: “I am planning a series of ‘Mayor’s Music’ events where people can enjoy themselves as well as raising money. These include a Glenn Miller-style band, a jazz band and a barn dance.

“With the support of the generous people and organisations of Ampthill, I know we can make a real contribution to the valuable work of my charities - and have some fun at the same time.”

The Mayor is also hoping to encourage more people to stand for town council at the next election.

He said: “One of the criticisms we hear is we are not elected, but not enough people put themselves forward for there to be an election.”

Councillor Sue Hinkin was appointed Deputy Mayor at the council’s AGM on May 28.
