Bedford Borough Mayor Dave Hodgson is attending a Self-Build Summit at Number 10 Downing Street today (Wednesday).
Housing Minister Brandon Lewis will be there along with Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud.
The summit, with more than 30 council leaders attending, has been organised by the National Custom & Self Build Association.
To coincide with the summit Bedford Brough Council is launching its own Self-Build and Custom Building Housing Register.
The dedicated section on the council’s will help the authority to gauge the local demand for self-build projects and what type of homes people want to create.
It will also enable the council to update interested people about emerging schemes or opportunities to self-build or custom-build housing in the borough.
Mayor Hodgson said: “House building figures have obviously been very strong in the borough in recent years, and we want to continue to help to meet the housing needs of local people. That’s why I’m delighted to announce the launch of the council’s Custom and Self Build Register. At a time of great housing need it is important that we support people seeking to create new homes themselves.
“For many people, self-build probably brings to mind Grand Designs, but our priority will be to help people for whom Self and Custom Build enables them to afford a home when they would not otherwise be able to.”
