Man fighting for his life

Victims uffered head injuries close to Tesco supermarket

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he suffered serious head injuries minutes after leaving a supermarket.

The 26-year-old Polish man who has not been identified, in now in a critical condition at Addenbrookes Hospital after he was found lying in the lay-by outside Tesco in Cardington Road, just 15 minutes after he was seen entering the shop.

The man from Grosvenor Street, Bedford, was found with severe head injuries at 7.55pm on Saturday (August 28).

Local residents believe it was a hit and run, but police say they are keeping an open mind as to how he received his injuries.

They are desperately seeking witnesses to the incident and are urging anyone who has any information to come forward.

A resident of Cardington Road who asked not to be named, was one of the first on the scene to help.

She said: "My husband and I were working on our front driveway and I saw a couple of girls stop to help him and a car had stopped in the road.

"I noticed he had head injuries and said to my husband 'they're going to move him' so I ran over and just told them to not move him because of his head injuries.

"It looked like a hit and run because he was just lying in the road and his head was in the gutter. Five minutes later the ambulance turned up.

"It is a bit of a shock to see something like that because we have only just moved in here. I just hope he pulls through."

Bedfordshire Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses, and in particular the driver of a Green VW Golf vehicle that stopped at the scene.

Det Insp Mark Tobutt, investigating said: "At present we are unsure of the cause of this man's injuries and are seeking more information about what happened.

"Did you help him afterwards or see anyone or any vehicle leaving the scene?"

The man, who has short light brown hair, was seen leaving Tesco at 7.41pm wearing a camouflage jacket over a white t-shirt with the Everlast logo across the chest and combat trousers. He had clingfilm covering a recent tattoo on his arm.

Anyone with any information on the incident can call DI Mark Tobutt on 01234 845320.
