Two girls have trimmed their lengthy locks to raise money for charity - and help people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses.

Five-year-old Avaani Katechia had been growing her hair since birth, but when she heard about a charity which provides free real-hair wigs to children undergoing chemotherapy, she decided she would cut it off.

Through her justgiving.com page she set herself a target of raising £350, which is the cost of making a wig, but her generous supporters smashed that total by giving an astonishing £1,656.

The Bedford pre-schooler said: “My family told me my hair is beautiful, and as long as Princess Rapunzel.

“I am donating a minimum of seven inches of my hair for the Little Princess Trust because I want to help the young children with cancer.”

With the support of her family, friends and teachers, Avaani bravely let Milton Keynes hairdresser, Shortcuts, trim 13.5 inches off, which was plaited ready to be sent to the charity.

Her father Himesh Katechia said: “Avaani has been amazing. She really understood how what she has done has helped other children.

“And she loves her new shorter haircut!”

Meanwhile, Grace Waters snipped off her long hair to raise money for Progressio, a charity which supports community, environmental and health programmes in less developed countries.

Grace said: “My mum cut off my hair in my living room, with kitchen scissors!

“The plait has been sent to Little Princesses, while all the money raised goes to Progressio to keep their projects going.

“I am heading to Nicaragua in January, for three months, to help improve the lives of people in small towns and villages.”
