PUBLIC and patients in Bedfordshire are being asked about plans to improve services for people suffering with a potentially life-threatening blood vessel.

The plans will ensure that patients have a better chance of survival as a result of the way that urgent surgery is going to be provided in the future.

The Midlands and East Specialised Commissioning Group (SCG) is overseeing the establishment of a number of specialist vascular centres across the region, including one at Bedford Hospital.

Nadim Noor, vascular Surgeon from at Bedford Hospital, said: “This is a new way of working which will save lives in Bedfordshire .

“It is well known that patients needing urgent vascular surgery have a much better chance of surviving if their operation is carried out at a specialist vascular centre.

“A specialist vascular centre enables all the staff involved – surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists and nurses - to develop and maintain their skills to the highest level, and to operate in an environment which has better facilities.”

Across the region, vascular surgeons and other healthcare professionals from the designated vascular centres will be working as a network with surgeons from the other district general hospitals to not only provide 24/7 high-quality vascular care, but also meet the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland’s new guidelines to improve outcomes for patients.

A number of events have been arranged across the region to ask people what they think about the plans and what worked well for them if they have any experience of vascular surgery.

The event for the Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes area will be held at Milton Keynes Hospital on July 16 between 2pm and 4pm.

There will be an opportunity to meet some of the team involved and find out what the changes are, and what they may mean to the people of Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.

An information pack will be available complete with a questionnaire. All of the feedback will be used to inform the future planning of vascular services in the region.

People can also go to www.eoescg.nhs.uk where they can download the information pack and complete an online questionnaire.

The deadline for feedback is August 14.
