You’re having a giraffe, and a bongo!
b12-708 Woburn Safari Park has baby giraffes and baby bongos
IT’S been a summer of love so far at Woburn Safari Park which has welcomed a bongo and a giraffe calf in recent weeks.
The latest addition, a week-old male Rothschild giraffe, which has yet to be given a name by park chiefs was welcomed into the fold.
The Rothschild giraffe is one of the most endanged giraffes in the world. The park has done well in its breeding of the animals as the giraffes have the luxury of an 11 acre environment with the option to stay in a group when they carve as they would in the wild.
And the park has also recently welcomed another zoo baby in the form of a female bongo calf. The birth is particularly exciting as there are only around 80 to 100 bongos left in their natural African habitat.
Bongos are so endangered because they are hunted by poachers for meat and skins and are expected to become extinct in the wild within the next 20 years.
Three bongo calves have been born at Woburn so far this year, strictly regulated by the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme.
Chris Smart, Head of Section at Woburn Safari Park, said: “The arrival of the three baby bongo calves this year are a wonderful addition to the herd and so very precious because of their critically endangered status.
Woburn Safari Park has been part of a breeding programme for these unique animals since 1974 and the keepers are overjoyed at how successful the recent results have been.”
