Would-be taxi driver rejected over convictions

He failed to declare criminal past

A man who applied to be a taxi driver failed to reveal his string of criminal convictions, which included possessing heroin and perverting the course of justice.

The man, whose name has not been released by Luton Borough Council, had to appear before a licensing panel last month after applying to be a private hire driver.

On his application, he had failed to declare the convictions, which included a robbery and two counts of theft in 1993, common assault in 1995, possessing heroin with intent to supply in 1997, for which he was sentenced to six years in prison, and perverting the course of justice, speeding and obstructing the police in 2007.

The panel ruled he was not 'a fit and proper person to hold a private hire driver's licence', and rejected his application.
