Building work has started on a new £1.23m community centre for Silsoe, which is due to be completed in the autumn and is part of a scheme to include a new lower school.
The Silsoe Community Centre is being constructed under a Design & Build Contract by Watson & Cox, with GSSArchitecture for Bloor Homes, and is part of a Section 106 Planning Agreement for 380 new homes, a lower school and outdoor sports facilities. It is on the site of the former Silsoe-based Cranfield University Soil and Agricultural Research Establishment, which recently relocated to the Cranfield University Campus Site at Cranfield.
When Cranfield University originally took the decision to develop the University site, they identified various legacy items to be provided for the village.
Of the total 60 or so acres available, something in the order of 30 acres was to be made over to the community in one form or another.
This legacy included community woodland and open space, a Community Centre incorporation, a main hall large enough for two badminton courts, multi-use games area, equipment stores, two meeting rooms, a kitchen, lounge and bar area, as well as land for the erection of a new Silsoe Lower School.
GSS have worked with Watson & Cox on a number of design and build projects for a variety
of different Community, Educational and Commercial clients.
Partner at GSSArchitecture William Assheton said “We have recently completed a number of village halls and facilities for community and sports groups and it is pleasing to know that our experience has enabled us to provide amenities that are benefiting entire communities.”
