Woman suffers serious injuries in collision with police car

The driver of a red Citroen, in her early 20s, was taken to Bedford Hospital by the Magpas helicopter after a collision on the old A421 near the Kempston Hardwick turn.

Eyewitnesses described on social media how the police car appeared to be involved in the pursuit of another vehicle when the accident took place on Sunday (May 15) afternoon.

In the Facebook discussion, the victim’s sister said: “I’m sorry but my sister just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Two police officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, which closed the Woburn Road for several hours.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said the officers involved are not members of the Bedfordshire force, adding: “The incident happened at 2.47pm when a police vehicle, heading towards Kempston, and a red Citroen car heading towards the M1 were in collision near the turn for Kempston Hardwick.

“The Citroen driver, a woman in her early 20s, was taken to Bedford Hospital south wing with serious leg injuries and two officers suffered more minor injuries.”

He added: “The force has, as is procedure, referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Crime Commission (IPCC).”

A Magpas spokesman said the Air Ambulance landed in Kempston at 3.31pm with Doctor Sophia De Maria and Paramedic Dan Read on board. They sedated her in order she could be removed from her vehicle.

He added: “She was then flown to Bedford Hospital, where she was in a stable condition upon arrival.”

Bedfordshire Police, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and an EEAST Ambulance Service paramedic crew were also in attendance.
