Will police jobs be outsourced?

POLICE chiefs are set to consider outsourcing of some services in a bid to protect frontline police work.
The outsourcing of police support services in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire is being considered as part of efforts to tackle the £73 million shortfall in funding.
Services which could be outsourced include HR, finance and ICT and chiefs will meet to discuss the proposals, made by the three chief constables, later this month.
If agreed by all three authorities, the earliest that outsourced services could be in place would be April 2013.
The move comes as part of the on-going collaboration between Bedfordshire Police, Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Hertfordshire Constabulary.
At a meeting on May 30 it was recommended that a full business case for the proposals should be drawn up.
As a result, it was agreed that each of the three police authorities will be asked in late June to consider formally the commissioning of a case for outsourcing the services.
Bedfordshire Police Authority chiefs will meet to discuss the plans in full on June 28.
Services which could be affected are human resources, ICT, finance, estates and facilities, corporate services, corporate communication, fleet, procurement and legal services.
The new supplier of the services would be security solutions company G4S which is being used by other forces.
What do you think of the plans, is outsourcing these services a good thing for the policing of Bedfordshire?
