A landlord who loves his national footballing side has come up with an innovative way of celebrating their success.
Tony Prunty, 52, who runs The Grafton Hotel in Midland Road, will knock 50p off a pint of beer for every goal that Ireland score in their two up-coming World Cup qualifying matches.
And in place of a pot of gold- the only Irish pub in Bedford will also pop the prices back up by 50p if the other side scores, meaning drinkers will have to be quick to bag themselves a bargain in the lighthearted promotion.
Tony, who has been the pub’s landlord for nearly 16 years, said: “I’m hoping we get a few extra people just to have a bit of crack.
“I’ll be happy to give beer away for £1 a pint less as long as we win.
“I did the same thing in the European Championships a couple of years ago and it went down really well.
So if anyone is thirsty and Ireland do well they will save themselves some money.”
The promotion begins when Ireland take on Sweden on September 6, and will also be on when they take on Austria on September 10.
And it looks like the side will be in need of a little bit of Irish luck if drinkers are going to grab a serious bargain.
Ladbrokes in Bedford are currently giving odds of 17 to 10 for the side to win, and 12 to one for them to win two nil.
