Wheel opportunity to race for charity
A wheelchair time trial competition will help to raise money for paralympic sports equipment in developing countries.
Rotary clubs around Bedford are supporting the Wheelchair Challenge Relay event at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium on Sunday, October 14.
Teams of up to four will attempt 4x100m relays in wheelchairs against the clock.
It is the brainchild of Rotarians who helped to look after athletes who trained at the stadium during the Paralympics, as well as Sport Bedford president Howard Darbon.
David Whitehead, president of the Rotary Club of Biggleswade Ivel said Rotarians were keen to act after meeting athletes from developing countries during the games.
He said: “We had a chance to meet Paralympians from all over the world, but it was clear that there was a significant disparity in terms of what equipment was available to the athletes from the different nations.
“Some countries are very well equipped but with others the wheelchairs were in a poor state or repair or were just very old.
“Rotary is keen to raise as much money as possible that can be put straight back into funding for the countries concerned.”
Wheelchair users and able-bodied entrants are welcome to take part and entry is £20 in advance or £25 on the day.
For youngsters aged from 13 to 18 the charge is £10.
The event will start at 11am.
