Warning over burglaries and car thefts

Householders are urged to be on their guard

Detectives are warning people to be on their guard following a spate of burglaries and car thefts in the Weatherby area of Dunstable.

One of the latest incidents took place in the early hours on Wednesday, March 10, when a garage door in Hillcroft was forced open.

The burglars took the keys to a blue Ford Escort, which they stole from outside the house but abandoned nearby as it was under repair.

A similar crime happened in nearby Greenfield Close around the same time when a front door was forced.

Luckily the home owner had used the inside door chain to stop intruders gaining entry.

A green Land Rover Defender was stolen from a parking bay in Bowmans Close the weekend before.

Det Con Michelle Sears of Dunstable CID reminded residents with uPVC doors of the importance of lifting handles before turning keys as this ensures they are deadlocked.

She added: "Residents can help us by reviewing security and contacting us if they saw anything suspicious near these properties."

Police advice on how to deter burglars includes: Keep vehicle keys out of sight at night; if you have a garage, use it; ensure security lights are working and your car is locked and alarmed; and ensure side entrances and windows are locked.

They also advise you to security mark property with a product like SmartWater, join Neighbourhood Watch, and if you see someone acting suspiciously, telephone the police.

If you have information, contact Det Con Sears, in confidence, on 01582 473056, the police switchboard on 01234 841212, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or text to 07786 2000 11.
