Hopeful parents looking to adopt children in Bedford borough are currently enjoying the shortest waiting times in the entire Eastern region.
That’s according to recent figures released by the government, which show it now takes only 81 days between a court giving authority to place a child and Bedford Borough Council deciding on a match with an adoptive family, in comparison with the national average of 210 days.
Councillor Sue Oliver, executive member for children’s social care, said: “We are working hard every day to find permanent, stable and loving homes for some of the borough’s most vulnerable children.
“These figures show that here in Bedford borough, adoptive parents will receive all the help and support they need, when they need it.”
Only five other local authorities in the entire country managed to achieve better results for their local children.
Councillor Oliver added: “Speaking as someone who fostered many teenagers for whom it was too late to consider adoption, I am convinced that our current focus on finding adoptive parents for as many of our ‘Looked After Children’ as early as possible will give them much better outcomes in life.”
