Volunteers are ready to clear untidy gardens

Green Aiders, run by community charity Groundwork Luton & Bedfordshire, is a free one-off gardening service for older (65 years plus) and disabled people who cannot tackle the work themselves.

Starting this month, the Green Aiders will tame 155 gardens across Bedfordshire in teams of Groundwork staff and volunteers, most of whom are public-spirited adults with learning disabilities.

The scheme improves the gardening skills, physical health and mental wellbeing of the volunteers while improving residents’ safety by reducing their risk of slips, trips and falls, and preventing them being targeted by doorstop criminals and rogue traders – both consequences of overgrown gardens.

With extra funding from the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, the group can tackle more garden jungles than ever.
