Views wanted on council tax benefit
Local views are being sought on a scheme to help safeguard low- income and vulnerable families from the impact of government changes to council tax support.
Over 13,000 households in Bedford Borough currently receive help to pay their council tax through council tax benefit, which is funded by Central Government.
But from next year this funding will be cut, and local councils are expected to meet the shortfall with their own schemes.
Bedford Borough Council is proposing that households with total savings above £8,000 will be expected to pay council tax. And there will be new measures that would prevent anyone who commits benefit or council tax support fraud from receiving assistance for six months.
The council is now asking for your views on the scheme. The consultation closes on November 19, and changes will takes effect in April.
