More than 400 extreme athletes from around the world flocked to Europe’s largest indoor skydiving facility near Bedford to compete for over £30,000 in prizes.

With speeds inside the wind tunnel reaching up to 190mph, it is not a sport for the faint-hearted.

Competitors as young as 10 years old had only 35 seconds to perform as many moves as possible in teams of two or four in the Formation and Dynamic categories, during the event at the weekend.

The last category is known as Freefly which consists of teams of two performing artistic routines judged on their difficulty and is described as figure skating in the sky.

Included in this year’s roster were current Number 1 ranking team AAA Team NMP Pch Hayabusa, who came a way with the Gold in the AAA Open category for the 4th Consecutive year.

This year drew teams travelling from as far and wide as the UAE, Singapore and Russia. Representing Skydive Dubai (famous for hosting a number of celebrities first time jumps) were 3 Maktoum freefly and dynamic teams this year, incredibly inventive and inspiring teams to watch, 4 members of which are under the age of 12.

The final round in AAA was tense with Hayabusa gaining a clear points lead to take the Gold and £5,000 prize cheque. However the battle for 2nd place had to be determined by a jump-off with both teams finishing their final round on a total of 263 points. XL won the jump off by a single point difference against VOLT’R.

Bodyflight Managing Director Paul Mayer entered with team Black Magic which consisted of fellow staff members Triston Hampton, Jay Richardson and world champion skydiver and local coach Joey Jones.

Sky diving enthusiast Paul Mayer said: “You get to fly like a bird for a minute, you watch superman movies and you wish you could fly, well actually you can.”

Bodyflight teamed up with Sky Dive magazine to form World Challenge TV which provided video content streamed worldwide over the two days, head to their facebook page www.facebook.com/bodyflightbedford to watch more clips from the weekend.
