VIDEO: Cheers for Obama

Celebrations were well under way in Luton only hours after Barack Obama stormed home in the American presidential elections.

The UK Centre for Carnival Arts hosted an impromptu lunchtime party at its Guildford Street office yesterday with many of the guests arriving bleary-eyed after staying up all night to watch the results.

Elated executive director Paul Anderson, who had gone to bed at 4.30am, said: "We're on the cusp of exciting times.

"It's wonderful, it's amazing, it's like the millennium eight years too late.Barack Obama is iconic, he represents hope and aspiration."

And he claimed there were parallels between Obama's victory and the UK Centre for Carnival Arts.

He said: "We're both starting a new journey in January – we'll be moving to our new building in January, just as he will be sworn into office.

"We're bringing new vision, it's a new dawn for culture and diversity."

And Paul predicted it would not be too long before Britain had a black Prime Minister.
