Plans have been unveiled for bright new pavement signs around the town to help guide pedestrians between the train station and the bus station.
Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson told bedfordtoday: “The link between the train station and the bus staion is actually very close but its got lots of junctions so people don’t understand where they’ve got to go and how close they are.
“It’s only about eight minutes so we are going to mark the walk with these great big yellow footprints placed on the pavement giving you directions. We are also going to have two signs at key points between the junctions telling you which way to go.
“It’s been funded by a grant from Sustrans, a sustainable transport charity which encourages people to walk and cycle and we are hoping to get these on the pavements on the route by September.”
Yo Higton, Sustrans project co-ordinator, Access to Stations, said: “Sustrans has been working in Bedford since March 13 to promote walking, cycling and public transport to the railway station.
“It is only a short walk between the bus and railway station but many people, especially visitors, do not know the quickest route. I’m hoping these new pavement signs will help people to access the railway station more actively via foot from the bus station and the town centre.

A Bedford Borough Council spokesperson said: “The signs are made from thermoplastic which are mixed with tiny glass beads to create a slip-resistant surface - is the same material which is used in children’s playgrounds.
“The signs are slip resistant and it is not expected people will slip.”
“However, should there be an unfortunate accident, the matter will be dealt with promptly through the council’s insurers.
