Unions hopeful of van plant bounceback

Negotiations continue over pay

Union reps say they are hopeful that events at the GMM van plant in Luton will take a turn for the better, despite negotiations reaching a stalemate.

Last week we revealed the plant, which makes the Vauxhall and Opel Vivaro, the Nissan Primastar and the Renault Trafic, would close for eight days this month. The first in the string of 24-hour closures, or 'down days', took place on Friday, September 26, with others to follow on October 6, October 10 and October 13, with a five-day closure from October 27 to 31.

Sales of the popular vans have fallen, and the measures have been introduced by the company so that the company can balance its stock with demand.

Representatives from the unions Unite, Amicus and T&G met with GMM bosses on Monday to try and strike a deal over workers' pay in the event of the down days continuing, after negotiations ended in deadlock last week.

Unite representative Andy Faughnan said: 'Things are still at a stage where discussions are continuing. It's still not at the stage where the unions are formally involved. I would like to think that we can reach an agreement that keeps morale high at the plant and that nobody will be disadvantaged.'
