Two pints of Guinness please

Electic mix The Paperboys deliiver in Bedford

A year ago, almost to the day, The Paperboys took to the Bedford stage and rocked your metaphorical socks off.

Back then Go! described the band as comparable to drinking Guinness with a tequila chaser while eating nachos covered in maple syrup.

What we were getting at is not a combination to make you sick, but an incredible, eclectic collision of styles as the Canadian five-piece mix Celtic and Mexican music, folk/country, roots, soul and pop/rock.

Well if that was a year ago, now they're two pints of Guinness and a double tequila, because the band is back and better than ever before.

Irish fiddle and flute combine with a folk/country beat and bassline, with Latin flavoured jarana and banjo and a mix of Americana and spanish lyrics.

The multicultural mix is hardly surprising from a bilingual band whose founding member is Mexican-Canadian and whose players cover a range of musical backgrounds from bluegrass to funk to traditional Scottish and Irish music.

Suffice to say the band have toured the globe winning numerous awards along the way.

The group is revered for its live show, playing an average of 150 gigs a year, but if you are still having trouble imagining what this musical melting pot sounds like you're in luck.

Together with insurgent country rock outfit Case Hardin, The Paperboys are performing at Star Rowing Club, in Commercial Road, Bedford, on Saturday (May 16).

Tickets cost 10. Doors open at 8pm. For more information visit www.entshed.com
