A solo sailing adventure for two six-year-old girls is testament to the growing popularity of the scouting movement with girls.

In Bedfordshire, girls now make up 20 per cent of the 5,000 young people who take part in the 77 local packs.

District commissioner Graeme Watt said: “Last year, the Bedford area saw our best ever result with a staggering 37 per cent rise to 201 young female members. Female Beaver Scouts led the way with a massive 65 per cent increase.”
