Twin town tennis tournament ends in a tie

Mayor of Dunstable hosts visitors

Friends from Dunstable's twin town Porz in Germany were welcomed for their bi-annual visit by the town's mayor Councillor Mike Mullany.

The connection between Dunstable Tennis Club and Rotweiss Porz Tennis Club has been running for 38 years and each year one takes the trip to visit the other for a tournament.

Mr Mullany, who is a member of the tennis club, hosted the 20 guests, including Frank Schnell, president of Rotweiss Porz Tennis Club, and their hosts led by Dunstable Tennis Club's Nick Boys, at Grove House in High Street North, where he gave a brief history of the town and a short speech.

The traditional England v Germany timed tennis matches followed, with scores tied at 178 games apiece.

It is the 20th year that a draw has happened and both clubs agree that it must be a record.

Dunstable gave the friendship trophy to Porz for next year's trip.

The guests enjoyed games in the park, shopping, strolling along the canal, tenpin bowling and a visit to Stockwood Discovery Centre and the Mossman Collection in Luton.

There was also a pirate themed party with a barbecue and live music to mark the visit.
