Town-made ‘chiller’ all set for premiere

A ‘GREAT British chiller’ made entirely on location in Bedford Borough is set to stage its UK premiere.

The Last Flight, which was written by Tony Phillips, stepfather to Jonathan Ross, will preview at the Ent Shed on July 24 as part of the Bedfringe Festival.

Based on true events the film explores the mysterious disappearance of world famous band leader Glen Miller, as well as semi-autobiographical excerpts from Tony’s own life.

Richard Mann, who produced the film first met Tony when he was booked to perform at his house as part of a Rolling Stones tribute band. The pair then worked on The Last Flight as a play and staged it all over the country at events including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010.

He said: “Everyone involved in the film is from Bedford, it’s a great thing and it shows that Bedford has a lot to offer.

“People can just moan about their town but Bedford has things going on. It just goes to show that if you put your mind to it you can do anything.”

He added: “I have been part of this now for three years. This film is definitely a Great British chiller.”

The Last Flight, which skips between scenes set in 1999, the 1960s and the 1940s, was filmed at Twinwood, Bedford Corn Exchange and the Ent Shed in Castle Road.

At the Ent Shed the crew created an authentic-looking 1960s club atmosphere and enlisted the help of Bedford’s many vintage enthusiasts to help pack out the scenes.

Richard said: “The whole film was done on favours. This is a real film created by professional people but everyone is from Bedford.

“The 1960s scene documents Tony’s first meeting with the Kray twins as he worked for them for many years as an entertainer.

“Many of the characters in the film draw on Tony’s own experiences.”

The film, which was directed by Richard’s brother James Mann, will premiere at the Ent Shed from 7.30pm on July 24.

Tickets cost £5 and are available on the door or from Bedford Central Box Office by calling 01234 269519.
