The Albion is top pub
b13-185 Russell Fletcher landlord of The Albion in Ampthill has been awarded CAMRA South Bedfordshire branch Pub Of The Year.
A traditional pub that specialises in real ale has been crowned Pub of the Year in South Beds for the second year running,
The Albion, based in Dunstable Street, Ampthill, has won the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) title for the second time. It will now battle it out between two other pubs to win the Bedfordshire crown.
Landlord Russell Fletcher said: “It is a really nice feeling, we haven’t even been open three years yet, so win win it for the second year is really good.
“A lot of it I would have to say is down to the staff, we have no jukebox, no fruit machine, we don‘t serve food. It is literally good ale and wine.
“That’s what’s really nice about winning, that we don’t offer much here but we still have won, it’s really touching.”ies of real on
Russell took over the pub in 2010 after it was was closed down and sold to brewery B&T in Shefford.
The Albion offers 12 varieties of real ale on the hand pumps, four of those are regular and four are changing beers,
He added: “I think what CAMRA likes is the contribution to real ale we have made. Since I came here most of the other pubs have started to offer real ale, I think every pub in Ampthill offers real ale now.
“I’m really passionate about areal ale and I just think it works here at The Albion. We are all very friendly, we have a lot of female customers and nobody is too scared to walk in on their own.
“We have a lot of regulars and I have worked hard to build up our customer base. We have groups that meet here and I try to hold charity nights and quiz nights every so often.”
