National competition comes to Bedford

Top musical talent from across the region takes to the stage at

Bedford Corn Exchange this weekend as national singing competition OPEN MIC UK rolls into town, writes Paul Fisher.

We're now at the regional final stage and from more than 10,000 entrants, the judges have narrowed it down to a handful of singing superstars who could be the chart toppers of tomorrow.

Beds is well represented in the nationwide competition, the winner of which will get 25,000 in prizes, with Bedfordians Christina Copsey, Isaac Moss,Sarah Little, Kam Singh, Sam Burridge and Andrew Richardson

all in the running.Cranfield's Billy Hayes, Shefford songstress Chrisse G and Henlow hipster Halina McNeil will also be performing at the live

final, which takes place at Bedford Corn Exchange on Sunday.Chris Grayston, head of A&R at Future Music, said: "We are searching for an original act that has the live ability to impress an audience of over 2,000 alongside a number of industry judges and A&R associates, as well as the potential to become professional recording artists."

The competition is divided into three age categories; under 16, 16 to 23 and 23 and over; with all types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters on display.

The prize for the overall winning act of Open Mic UK 2009 will be to record their own album in professional studios with an industry vocal specialist, with the potential of large investment for a single release as well as the aim to chart nationally. The winners will additionally have the opportunity to tour across the UK. The regional final of Open Mic UK 2009 takes place this Sunday at Bedford Corn Exchange.
