A teenager, who was clinically dead for 45 minutes, was brought back to life by his brother after he suffered a heart attack at his home.

Paolo Grasso, 16, suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Church Lane, Bedford, at around 1am on Thursday, September 27.

But his quick-thinking brother carried out CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Paolo, who plays in the under-16’s team at Bedford Town FC, was immediately taken to Bedford Hospital, and was then transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital. There he was induced into a four-day coma, before
doctors carried out a procedure to look at his heart.

Older brother Paski, 18, said: “I heard Paolo gasp a couple of times, I called out to him, but heard nothing.

“Mum came running in to see what was happening, We couldn’t get Paolo to respond so she ran downstairs to call an ambulance. I did CPR on his heart and mouth-to-mouth.

“He gasped and came round, and then the
ambulance arrived and the crew took over.

“I didn’t really think about what I was doing. I thought he was dead and I knew I had to do
something.”

Paolo, who attends Mark Rutherford Upper School, is now unable to go to school or play football for up to six months. He is set to go back to hospital next week to
undergo another procedure on his heart.

He said: “I’m really proud of my brother, I wouldn’t be here without him.”

Mum Libby said: “I can’t even bear to think what might have happened to him if Paski wasn’t there.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped and supported us, Great Ormond Street, the paramedics, Bedford Hospital and our friends and family. They’ve been fantastic.”
