Student warning after attempted robbery

Police in Bedford are warning students to be on their guard after a 20-year-old woman fell to the ground during an attempted robbery.

The incident happened just after midnight on Thursday, September 27 as the victim and her friend were making their way home from a night out in the town and walking along Goldington Road.

A man and two women approached the students walking in the opposite direction, a women grabbed at the victim’s phone as they reached the junction of George Street.

But the victim and her friend managed to keep hold of the phone and the offender continued to walk towards Bedford with her two friends.

The offender is described as a white female, in her late teens, 5ft 6inchs tall, with a stocky build and blonde hair.

She was wearing a red padded jacket. The man walking with her was wearing a white tracksuit top.

Detective Constable Emma Dahl, investigating, is keen to trace anyone who saw a woman matching this description in the area.

She said: “At this time of night a few people were out and about and it is possible that taxi drivers and other people making their way home could have seen someone matching this description.

“I would urge anyone who can identify the offender or witnessed the incident to contact the police.”

Bedfordshire Police would also like to take this opportunity to remind students to take some basic measures to minimise the chance of being a victim.

Det Con Dahl added: “When you are out, where possible try and keep any valuables hidden. Smart phones and media players are becoming must-have items for many people - that includes criminals too.”

If you have information relating to this incident, contact Det Con Dahl, in confidence, on 01234 275357, the non-emergency number 101, or text information to 07786 200011.
