IT’S Britain’s golden year of sport and an Olympic star will be lending his support to an aspiring athlete at the Bedford SportsAid lunch.

The lunch is now a popular regular fixture in the Bedford sporting calendar and this year Olympic sprinter Jamie Baulch will be the star guest.

Jamie, the charismatic British runner who raced to the silver medal with the 4x400 relay quartet in the 1996 Atlanta Games, will be speaking at the lunch in May.

Organisers are hoping the Bedford community will swing their support behind the fundraising lunch, taking place just a couple of months before the London Olympics.

It is supporting 19-year-old Bedford running starlet Lucy James - herself now a regular member of the GB Junior Athletics Team.

Lucy competed in the European Junior Championships in Estonia where she reached the final of the 400m, and helped GB to gold in the 4x400 relay. She is currently studying for a B.SC Sports Management Honours Degree at Loughborough University.

Guest speaker Jamie enjoyed a career spanning 15 years at the top of world class athletics.

He won 11 medals at Olympic Games, World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

He became World Indoor Champion in 1999 and still holds the British Indoor record over 400m set in 1997

Since retiring in 2005, Jamie has starred in several reality TV shows including BBC Superstars and Cirque de Celebrité.

He recently campaigned for his team’s World Championship Gold medals from 1997 to be presented to the 4x400m quartet of Iwan Thomas, Roger Black and Mark Richardson after the disqualification of the USA team.

Bedford SportsAid lunch is being sponsored by MacIntyre Hudson, Woodfines, The Embankment Hotel, Bedford Blues and the Times & Citizen.

It takes place in the marquee at Bedford Blues Rugby Club in Goldington Road on Friday, May 11 and tickets have gone on sale. It promises to be an excellent function so why not book a table for your company or clients?
