Signed, sealed delivered, piano cat could be yours
Stevie Wonder the blind cat who loves playing the piano at Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire. See MASONS story MNSTEVIE: Staff at an animal charity have named an abandoned blind cat Stevie Wonder because the pet loves - playing the PIANO. Animal carers believe the six-year-old moggie - who was found in a garden - craves pushing his paws on the keys because the sound helps connect him to the outside world. When the supersti-puss was found he was flea-ridden, suffering from worms, had a hernia in his stomach and both of his eyes were missing. Vets at Wood Green animal shelter in Godmanchester, Cambs., who are caring for Stevie, are unsure whether his eyes were surgically removed or he was born this way.
Meet Stevie Wonder, a blind rescued moggy who loves to play the piano, just like the music icon.
When Stevie was found in Bedford in July he was covered in fleas, had worms, a hernia on his stomach and it was found that at some point in his life both of his eyes had been removed.
But since arriving at the Wood Green, the Animals Charity in Cambridgeshire, and being fostered in the home of deputy manager Beverley Street, Stevie has found a new lease of life and discovered a new love of music.
Beverley said: “He likes the sound of the piano but he’s not very good at playing it, it entertains him and he has a very good time playing around on it.
“He has extremely good hearing and is keen to listen to what is happening. He is amazing, when we are playing with him if you make a sound he is investigating it straight away. I’m convinced he was born without his eyes because he’s so special.”
Stevie has now recovered from his ordeal and is looking for a new home. He will need a home where the furniture is not moved too often so he can create a mental map of his living space. Stevie also needs a secure garden to allow him to explore safely.
Beverley added: “He wouldn’t do too well in a home where other cats are in the house because cats read a lot on body language and body posture.
“He would struggle to understand having to communicate in a multi-cat household.
“I think he would probably be a very good hunter if he gets the chance because his hearing is so good, he can fly across the room at high speed and pounce on stuff the other cats wouldn’t have a chance of catching.”
The Cambridgeshire base of the animal charity opened its doors in 1987 and is now the charity’s 52-acre headquarters. The Godmanchester site has become one of the largest animal re-homing centres in Europe and has facilities for the care of dogs, cats, small and field animals.
Staff also care for former battery hens and introduced a re-homing scheme for the birds in 2008.
