People braved the February chill at the weekend to put on some beachwear and grab a bucket and spade for a special beach party.

Residents of Ampthill donned their beach shorts and turned out in force on Sunday morning to launch the new theme for the three-day Ampthill Festival.

This year the theme will be Ampthill By The Sea, which follows on from last year’s Olympics theme,

New Festival chairman Richard Benson promises plenty of seaside fun and games when the three-day festival kicks off for real from July 5 to 7.

He said: “You can’t get much further away from the seaside than Ampthill, so we decided to bring the seaside here.

“The great British seaside is a wonderful tradition and we can’t wait to become a seaside town with candyfloss, fish and chips and kiss me quick hats aplenty.

“The centre point will be the Proms on the Saturday night, which will have a special twist with a selection of seaside favourites, such as ‘Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’.

The seaside fun will kick off on the Friday night with AmpRocks, followed by the Proms In The Park on Saturday evening, finishing with a free Gala Day on the Sunday. Organisers are hoping get a bigger headline act than last year at AmpRocks, which was the Lightning Seeds.
