Emergency services spent hours trawling the river for someone in the water on Friday evening after a member of the public reported hearing a loud ‘splashing’ sound.

Members of the Bedfordshire Luton Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at around 7pm by the Star Rowing Club after they believed it could have been someone jumping in the river.

A spokesman for Beds Police said: “A member of the public reported hearing a loud splashing sounds, coughing and ducks flappiing around. So it was believed that someone may have jumped in the water.”

The police helicopter and a rescue boat trawled the water for around six hours before calling off the search at 1am.

Police officer returned the next day to carry out a search in daylight, but nothing was found.
