School chef's serving of success
She lands place in national final
Things are hotting up for a school cook competing in a prestigious national schools contest.
Tanya Watkin, who works at Eaton Bray Lower School, has reached the final of the LACA's School Chef Of The Year 2010 contest for the second year running.
The 36-year-old battled against two other cooks and won the regional heat on Friday, January 29, with two dishes that impressed judges.
Now she is warming up for the final in Sheffield, in May.
The mum of two said: "The judges loved what I cooked. It went down really well and I got great feedback."
Her entry in the regional heat was a main course of lamb and filo scrunchy served with new potatoes and summer roasted vegetables, followed by wholemeal chocolate cake with a strawberry compote and a banana and strawberry baby 'chino'.
Cooks have to make sure the meals cost no more than 1.25 to produce, and complete the dishes in 90 minutes. Both dishes must include the all-important 'five-a-day'.
Finding organic produce has become easier for Tanya, as a retired teacher from the school has created an allotment patch in the grounds.
If Tanya manages to clinch first place in the final she will receive a trophy, cash prize and a day's vocational experience, and invitations to a calendar of high-profile catering industry events.
