Bedford Academy has been handed the prestigious International School Award by the British Council for its partnership with a school in Kenya.

The link with Bishop Okiring School has been established over the last two years, and has included humanities teacher Ellie Branson travelling to Africa.

This is one of the British Council’s highest awards, and the link-up has also been recognised by being featured in the BBC Olympic Dreams programme.

Academy principal Claire Smith said: “In just two years we have gone from having no international links to earning the full International School Award this year, so we’re all incredibly proud of how far Bedford Academy has come in such a short space of time.

“This award is a testament to the dedication of staff to giving Bedford Academy students exciting opportunities to develop their global citizenship throughout the school year, and encourage an open mindset and appreciation of different cultures inside and outside the classroom.

“We regularly take part in the BBC World Class school debates so to have an entire debate focusing on our partnership with Bishop Okiring is a great honour and the icing on the cake for a terrific autumn term at Bedford Academy.”
