School expansion given go ahead

Nine schools to grow despite some opposition

Town Hall chiefs have given the green light to the second phase of a scheme to remodel Luton's secondary schools despite opposition from some residents.

Luton Council's executive committee on Monday approved phase two of the Building Schools For The Future programme, which will see nine schools, including Icknield, Ashcroft and Lealands, enlarged to accommodate growing student numbers.

But the decision will have angered residents who turned out to voice their opposition to the extensive expansion of Icknield High School, which will see student numbers almost double over a five year period and Woodlands Secondary School relocated to share the Riddy Lane site.

Concerned residents told officers at the meeting last Wednesday that having an extra 1,010 students on campus would have an adverse effect on the area, with surrounding roads already heavily congested, and plagued with anti-social behaviour and litter problems.
