Saddle up and support the handicapped riders
A new charity appeal has seen the Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire get in the saddle, for a bid to raise £30,000 to support Bedford & District Handicapped Riders Association.
Helen Nellis is part of the campaign to support the school which was launched 50 years ago. Financed through donations. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the school provides vital outdoor exercise and enrichment opportunities for up to 100 disabled children and adults every week.
Trustee Nick Kier, of Bedford Park Rotary Club which has supported the project, said: “We recently had the opportunity to acquire a twelve acre paddock opposite the riding centre that we had rented for the last twelve years and in doing so secure the future of the association. We need funds to be able to construct field shelters, install new fencing and the like as well as to cover on-going costs.
“Our volunteers are here every week, some helping with the ponies and the riders, others caring for the ground, paddocks and so on.”
Donations can be made through www.virginmoneygiving.com or by cheques payable to BDHRA, sent to Jean Bedford at The Riding Centre, Balls Lane, Willington.
